OVER THE COURSE OF 4 MONTHS, TOGETHER, WE:

  • Reached 43,000 through our Vote Local Campaign

  • Worked alongside 38 local partners

  • Spanning 30 states

  • Hosted 5 in person and virtual events

  • Prioritized investing $11,000 directly back into local communities

We’re changing the way communities think about local government, politics and voting. We’re creating opportunities for community conversations focused on how each of us can build and use our own political power. We’re empowering folks to take action and activate their friends and communities in joining them in local civic activities. Thank you for being part of this community, and thank you for showing up in all the ways you have this year.

We’re just getting started…

2022 SNAPSHOT:

Along with our partners, we hosted Vote Local Day on October 8th providing information, knowledge, and tools so folks were ready to vote in local races and prepared to make informed decisions that positively impact communities - at the ballot box & beyond.

Local leaders and change makers shared stories of progress in their communities.  Short conversations & trainings explored intersections of local elected leaders’ jobs, issues like reproductive justice, education & voting access and how we can collectively shape the communities and democracy we want to be a part of.

FLEX YOUR POWER EVENT

Along with our partners, Sisters Lead Sisters Vote, HBCU Green Fund, Young Mobilizers, and Black Women’s Leadership Collective, we hosted Flex Your Power on 12/6 in Atlanta. The multi-media rally & mobilization event brought together 100+ to discuss how we can build and use our political power. Big Facts Podcast, Confused Caucus Podcast and Qri Montague talked how they use their platforms to inform, engage and activate their communities to flex their power. ATL based comedian, David Perdue and Comedian, Writer, Actress and Activist Joyelle Nicole Johnson had the crowd roaring in laughter with their standup. The evening also included a relational organizing training and giveaway - the audience, including high school and college students, won gift cards for reminding friends & family to vote.

2022 Local Voters Guide

Access, opportunity, and freedom are not just decided in state capitols. Sheriff, district attorney (DA), school board, and city council influence how local government works and profoundly shape how we live. With 99% of elections this year being local & state positions, we developed and distributed our Local Voters Guide across digital platforms, events and through partnerships.

Available in English & Spanish, the free nonpartisan Guide explains 10 state & local positions and how their jobs directly impact issues like reproductive justice, education, and voting access. The guide was developed alongside partners to be used year round.

LOCAL PARTNERSHIPS

Partnerships are at the core of who we are and what we do. We honor the organizations and leaders that have been in their communities longer than we have and built power and trusting relationships. We are grateful to have worked in coalition with organizations and community leaders across 30+ states (scroll to see our partners and support their work). Through our partnerships, we reached, informed, engaged and activated in ways that centers community and builds sustainable change over time.

At the heart of Be The Ones lies gratitude and joy. We invested $11,000 in local Georgia communities leading into the runoff election in December. We distributed hundreds of gift cards to organizers, canvassers, joy bringers, artists & volunteers to thank them and bring some joy. Because we are all about all things local - we gave out gift cards to local GA businesses, coffee & boba shops and grocery stores to ensure we were investing our dollars right back into small businesses and the communities we support.

Support Our Work:

Since day one, we’ve made it our mission to create opportunities for community centered conversations & learning that engages, informs and activates - not just around elections but allows for long term sustainable local civic participation.  We can’t expect people to be ready to participate in local civic activities if they aren’t prepared. That preparation has to happen all year long. That is why Be The Ones exists.

We have big plans for 2023 to build out our programs, expand and strengthen our partnerships and provide additional tools and resources. But, these plans depend on funding. Thank you for investing in your work for 2023 and beyond.
