CIVIC LEARNING & PARTICIPATION

The Young Leaders Program strengthens the conditions that make civic participation possible and sustainable by improving equitable access, understanding, and shared responsibility across South Carolina.

At its core, this program addresses a growing civic health crisis: too many South Carolinians lack clear, accessible, trustworthy information about how decisions are made and how to influence them - from the ballot box to fixing that pesky pothole down the street.

Through nonpartisan voter education & mobilization, advocacy training, public resources, creative civic experiments, coalition partnerships, and championing pro-democracy policy at the local and state levels, we help connect the dots between issues, systems, and decision-makers. We make civic engagement understandable, accessible, and actionable.

OUR APPROACH

South Carolina is facing a civic information and participation crisis. The biggest barrier to meaningful engagement isn’t apathy — it’s access to clear, relevant, and trustworthy information.

People cannot meaningfully improve their communities without understanding who makes decisions, how systems operate, where power lives, and how to influence outcomes.

In coalition with community-based partners, we co-create opportunities that increase civic understanding, motivate informed engagement, and build a culture of accessible, inclusive, sustainable — and joyful — participation.

We connect local issues to the systems shaping them. We democratize civic information through digital hubs and free public resources. We provide practical tools that move people from awareness to action. We champion pro-democracy policy, protect the right to vote, and run relational and creative get-out-the-vote initiatives designed to expand and engage the electorate.

And we do it creatively.

We are exploring bold, culturally rooted ways to make civic engagement feel irresistible and celebrated.

WHY WE DO IT

Systemic inequities across race, gender, generation, and geography have excluded millions from meaningful participation in the economic, social, cultural, and political systems that shape their lives.

Information and participation are the foundation of democracy. When people understand how systems work — and see clear pathways to engage — they become invested in shaping the future of their communities.

When civic information is inaccessible, trust erodes.
When participation feels confusing or closed off, disengagement grows.
When communities lack infrastructure, inequities deepen.

We exist to change that.

By making civic knowledge accessible, building coalitions, protecting elections, and experimenting with creative engagement strategies, we are rebuilding civic health across South Carolina.

Democracy is not self-sustaining. It requires informed people, connected communities, and shared accountability.

That is the work.
