✨March Recap✨

WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO:

March had me coming back to the same thought over and over again: people really want to understand more right now - how things work, what’s actually true, and where they fit into all of it.

We saw that clearly during 4-H Advocacy Day at the State House. After a full day, when most students had already left, high school students Carlie, Keira, and Logyn asked if they could stay longer to sit in on a Senate Judiciary Committee meeting. So we did. They stayed nearly 90 minutes after everyone else had gone - just to experience it for themselves. One of them said, “I didn’t know about committees before today, and now I've learned about it and seen it. I can better explain it to my friends.”

That’s been sitting with me.

I’m a big believer that no one needs to know everything - but knowing a little more, and experiencing it firsthand, changes how you show up. And how you bring others along with you.

And March gave a lot of opportunities for people to “know a little more.”

We were supposed to see a vote for the next South Carolina Supreme Court Justice - but 24 hours before, the incumbent withdrew his nomination, postponing the vote and raising a lot of questions about how that process works.

There was another wave of confusion and misinformation around our elections - from the SAVE Act to court cases to executive orders to bills in the State House.

And candidate filing in SC closed, setting the ballots for 760+ races across the state - many of them local, easy to miss, and deeply important.

All of it points to the same thing: there’s so much happening, but not always enough shared understanding to make sense of it.

And that gap matters. The more people understand, even just “a little more,” the more likely they are to feel ready to participate.

That’s where we come in.

As we head into April, we’re creating more ways for people to learn, ask questions, and get connected - whether that’s through our Vote By Mail Campus Program launching this month, our voter education and mobilization work, or just showing up and having real conversations about what’s happening and why it matters.

This moment isn’t about having all the answers - it's about making it easier for more people to take the  next step. And that’s exactly what we’re going to continue to do in the weeks and months ahead.

Here are a few highlights - there are links to more context, photos, and stories from the ground.

And, be sure to head over to our Pancakes & Policy blog for Advocacy updates and check out this two-part series to learn why March was a big month for our state’s highest court (SC Supreme Court) in South Carolina - Part 1 here and Part 2 here.

And as we look ahead, be sure you are signed up for our newsletter and checking our events page and hope to see you out there!

🎙️ SC Tenant Union + Be The Ones Power Building Chat

A joyful conversation (+ a few tech challenges) on how organizing rooted in mutual aid, creativity, care, and relationships helped move H.4270 from idea to unanimous vote out of subcommittee.

🗳 Our Elections Are NOT Cancelled

We hosted a virtual session breaking down who runs elections, what powers they have (and don’t), how to spot misinformation, + how you can help protect voting rights without burning out. This session cut grounded folks in what’s actually true - and where our energy matters most.

🎬 The Inquisitor Screening

A powerful evening screening The Inquisitor - a film exploring the life, leadership, and legacy of Barbara Jordan + community conversation with SC House Representatives Annie E. McDaniel and Courtney Waters. Hosted in partnership with Indie Lens Pop-Up, NAACP Columbia Branch, and The Nickelodeon Theatre, the evening brought community together for reflection, dialogue, and connection.

🤝 Faith & Politics Institute Congressional Pilgrimage

We were honored to be the only SC nonprofit invited to participate in the annual Faith and Politics Institute Pilgrimage. The civil rights gathering brought 160 national leaders + members of Congress to Charleston to reflect, connect, and engage at the intersection of faith, leadership, and civic responsibility.

It was a powerful reminder that building a more perfect union isn’t a destination - it’s something we actively choose through how we show up for one another and the communities we’re part of.

👉 Full reflection coming soon! (we’re still reflecting..)
